Description of Position: Front desk receptionists help with the management of the Writing Center. Receptionists greet students, answer phone calls, make tutoring appointments, record tutoring appointments, troubleshoot computer problems, fix printing problems, and more. Receptionists need to learn how to be proficient with all Writing Center software, including its online appointment system, its grammar software, and office programs. If an applicant is selected, the applicant will go through a 2 week probation period in which the director makes a judgement about performance. If the applicant meets standards, he/she will be fully employed. If the applicant does not, he/she will not be fully employed.
Description of Position: Reading and writing tutors help students with the reading and writing process and not with translating texts or editing papers. Using guiding questions, reading and writing tutors elicit critical thinking in students, aiding the students understanding of the readings or his/her writing. Reading and writing tutors must understand the structure main ideas, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays. Along with essay knowledge, reading and writing tutors should have a good understanding of grammar mechanics as well. If an applicant is selected, the applicant will go through a 2 week probation period in which the director makes a judgement about performance. If the applicant meets standards, he/she will be fully employed. If the applicant does not, he/she will not be fully employed. Writing tutors also attend mandatory meetings assigned by the director.
